THE MONHEGAN MEMORIAL LIBRARY DISTINGUISHED WRITERS SERIES was founded in 2016 by Mia Boynton. As a Library with no public funding, we have historically relied upon the goodwill of local writers to put together a small summer program each year. And we have had some wonderful experiences! Looking to grow our audience and expand upon these talks, we thought: what if we could attract high profile authors and put on larger events? How enriching that would be!

To start, we needed a distinguished writer and some funding. We applied to the Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation, and they underwrote expenses for our pilot program, featuring Richard Blanco. It was a rousing success and the rest, as they say, is history! With hard work and good luck, we’ve now been able to host 4 Distinguished Writers so far for varied programs engaging our community and adding to the rich literary heritage of the island.
