From librarian Mia Boynton’s welcome remarks: We can all remember reading the book that first invited us to “see Beyond” the surface of our world to the uncomfortable truths beneath. For me, this book was the “The Giver.” I can still so clearly recall the creeping feeling of unease as I read about Jonas in his well-ordered community. Revisiting the book as an adult, its power only increases, especially reading it here. On Monhegan, we like to think we know the meaning of community. On this island, as in any of the Villages in “The Giver’s” world, we are intimately aware of both the struggles and as well as the magic that happens when people must depend on each other. Lois Lowry’s books portray the dark side of communities as well as the light they can contain when we choose to value openness and connection over fear. And at this time especially, her stories can inspire us to honor this spirit, both on Monhegan and in our larger society.

What a treat it was to meet Lois and hear some of her wisdom! If you missed her program, you can visit her website here and read some wonderful speeches of hers as well as get information about her many books.
